  • Die Fledermaus, or The Bat Bites Back (2014), a new English-language libretto for Strauss’s Die Fledermaus set in 1890s Vienna. Premiered in January 2014 in a production by The Lamplighters in San Francisco.
  • The Manga Flute (2012), a new musical fantasy about the characters in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte in a story inspired by manga and anime, Japanese graphic novels and animated films.
  • The Girl of the Golden West (2006), a new and authentically American libretto for Puccini’s opera set in a mining camp during the California Gold Rush
  • Carmen (2001), a dramatic new libretto based on the original Prosper Merimée novella and Bizet’s own edition of his score
  • Stories by Hoffmann (1999, revised in 2009), a new libretto for Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, about the writer E.T.A. Hoffmann, his obsessive love for a young soprano, and the dark fantasies he dreamed about her
  • Daughter of the Cabinet (1998), Lecocq’s operetta La Fille du Madame Angot made into a bawdy satire of current American politics
  • The Riot Grrrl on Mars (1997), Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri retold in the style of a low-budget 1950s sci-fi movie crossed with a modern graphic novel
  • Bat out of Hell (1996), an adaptation of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus set in Berkeley, California, in the last crazy years of the dot-com boom
  • Beatrice and Benedick (1995), adapted from Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict and Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing
  • All’s Fair (1989), a musical screwball comedy with music by Kurt Misar
