music by Jacques Offenbach from his opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann

The poet and musician E. T. A. Hoffmann is obsessed with his love for Stella, his former student, now a rising young opera singer. But Stella has other suitors, including the wealthy and powerful Councilor Lindorf. In hopes of getting Hoffmann to write again, his Muse sends him three dark, fantastical dreams to show him the truth about the woman he loves — and about himself as well.
